How to Install Heavy Duty Differentials

Here are a few things to keep in mind when installing a heavy-duty differential. Pull your wheels and wash the housing and tubes & hubs with solvent. Then rinse everything with water and wipe or blow-dry. Inspect the housing for damage and check that the axle vent is open while you’re there.

If your working on a forward unit check the through the shaft and replace the seal and bearing. Before installing the yokes check the seal surface for nicks, burrs, or wear grooves that may cause seal leakage. If needed install a speedi-sleeve but don’t use a triple lip seal with sleeve. Use a CR seal or equal. Lubricate the lip and rotate yoke while installing and torque to specs.

Check out your wheel bearings and cups, replace it if needed and install a new seal in the hub. Apply 1/8 bead of silicone to the mounting surface of the housing. Install the diff, wheels, & axles. Fill with gear lube (on forward units fill nose cone as well) Test operation of power divider and then test drive the unit for 5 miles at 25 mph for the break in.

That’s it, just remember to clean everything and check all bearings and replace your seals.
