Things to Keep in Mind When Working on your Trucks’ Exhaust System

There are a few things to keep in mind when working on your trucks’ exhaust system. Mufflers are especially important because two mufflers that look the same may have different baffles and backpressure ratings. If you install a muffler with too much back pressure you will see an increase in fuel consumption, loss of power, premature blowout, and the potential for engine damage.

It’s also a good idea to inspect your current muffler, for broken baffles, carbon buildup that could restrict it’s flow, affecting power, fuel mileage, smoking. The old-style mufflers are quite reasonable in price $50-$70. However, newer mufflers depending on the application can range from $999-$2999.

If you have a single exhaust system and refit it with a dual system, the extra elbows and pipe that are added will add back pressure, this must be taken into consideration when fitting the system with the right components. Consult your exhaust supplier for the proper ratings.

When fitting new pieces to the exhaust system it’s a good idea to use band clamps instead of the u-bolt style, it makes it a lot easier to take apart the next time around. Before starting your exhaust work have all your pieces on hand to make everything go as smooth as possible.
