9 Things You Should Check During Your Annual Truck, Tractor & Trailer Inspections

Here are a few reminders of things to watch for – the following may mean the vehicle won’t pass inspection, these are only a few reminders….

1) Brake system: Adjustment-maximum on type 30 chamber, 2″ stroke, 1/4 past meets out of service, brake lining-no cracks, no separation from the table, no grease or oil, no less than 1/4″ lining.

2) Coupling Devices: 5th wheels – mounting-missing fasteners, movement between mounting components, cracks, more than 3/8 horizontal movement between pivot bracket and pin, any front or rear stop missing or loose, more than 3/8 movement on slider and base, cracks in 5th wheel. / Pintle: Missing fasteners, any welding to the pintle, more than 20% wear, loose latch.

3) Lights: missing or inoperative lamps

4) Steering: Excess freeplay, 2″man-4″power, loose u-bolts, front axle cracks or welded repairs, loose pitman arm or any movement in any of the components.

5) Suspension: Cracked, broken, loose, missing u-bolts, hangers, or other axle positioning parts, any broken leaves or missing ones, deflated air system.

6) Frame: Cracked, broken, loose, sagging or missing fasteners.

7) Tires: Steering tires with less than 4/32, exposed belting, cuts with exposed belting, mixing bias and radials on same axle, any BUS with recap, no less than 2/32 on axles other than steering.

8) Wheels: cracks, fasteners, welds.

9) Windshield: Any crack, discoloration, vision reducing matter, unless crack is less than 1/4, crack doesn’t intersect, damage no more than 3/4 diameter.
